I am getting the feeling, despite probably my better judgment and despite absolutely my overbearing cynicism when it comes to these types of things, that we are living in what will be a pivotal point in history. Barack Obama is not an ideal politician or a perfect candidate, and the right-wing is still going to come down hard on him while, at the same time, the left-wing kids who write for alt-weeklies will rail against him for not being fucking insane about the earth or whatever, but damned if I don’t feel like tonight, watching that speech in the football stadium with the U2-laced intro and the fireworks at the end, that something important happened tonight. Something pivotal.

It’s a bit of a travesty that we’re realistically at a point where America could become what Canada should be. We could go backward while the US goes forward. It’s disappointing that all of the sudden our country’s politics are ridiculously divisive and more regionalized. We have a Prime Minister who hates everything about Canada’s political history (And I’m not a rabid anti-Harper guy or anything. I think, considering the circumstances, he’s done a fair job [until recently with Flaherty and Clement being dicks all the time] but, seriously, he doesn’t seem to like the idea of Canada.) and an opposition that is out of money and in disarray.

There are very few lights.

But who knows where things will go. I’ve still got the cynicism and I’ve still got that impending feeling that the Republican machine can steamroll through and take this election again. But there’s a nagging hope inside of me after tonight. And that’s not bad at all.

I spent way too much time tonight thinking about the Democratic National Convention. Which is weird. First, because I am not American. Second, because it really is kind of empty pageantry, almost completely devoid of purpose or relevance. They can’t pick the candidate at the National Convention anymore, because the National Convention happens only three months before the election and, seriously, what kind of legitimate first-world election has a campaign that short? (The answer to that is ‘almost all of the parliamentary ones, but, dude, shut up.)

I will say this, though: when did CNN get so terrible? I know Fox News Channel is the popular whipping boy as far as cable news channels go — and, damn, do they ever deserve it — but CNN is, I think, worse at the moment. At least Fox has the twisted decency to wear its bias on its sleeve, hiring Karl Rove and running all sorts of terrible headlines in that stupid ticker.

CNN, on the other hand, has this air of still being legitimate. But the honest truth about them is that they’re a bunch of muckracking assholes. They’re not necessarily biased toward any political angle, but they’re clearly desperate for big drama all the goddamned time. It’s to the point where they can’t speak to a woman at this convention without asking her, first, if she is a Hillary supporter and, more importantly, if she hates Barack Obama because of it.

Wolf Blitzer is perhaps the only political TV personality without a grasp on how politics work. James Carville is like a hundred years old and just hates everything that young people might like. Anderson Cooper is awesome but clearly looks uncomfortable. And the rest of them are a bunch of tools.

That crazy touch-screen they have IS pretty cool, though. It’s like a giant iPhone!

Occasionally I make mistakes at work. Everyone does, I suppose. Even superheroes. Superman once accidentally let Lex Luthor become President of the United States. Spider-Man accidentally brought the Venom symbiote to earth. Batman just stood there while his parents were shot to death. And so on.

Mistakes happen, even to those who are fictional and have superpowers. Which is why seeing mistakes like this just make me feel really good about myself:

Hey John McCain, here’s a new headline for your website: McCain’s communications staff unsure on correct spelling of opponent’s name.

Seriously. That’s not even a typo. The ‘k’ key isn’t adjacent to ‘h’. It’s just the result of someone legitimately thinking Barack Obama spells his first name as ‘Barach’. Like ‘Bach’, but with an extra syllable. Killer.
