Obama Obama Obama

I am getting the feeling, despite probably my better judgment and despite absolutely my overbearing cynicism when it comes to these types of things, that we are living in what will be a pivotal point in history. Barack Obama is not an ideal politician or a perfect candidate, and the right-wing is still going to come down hard on him while, at the same time, the left-wing kids who write for alt-weeklies will rail against him for not being fucking insane about the earth or whatever, but damned if I don’t feel like tonight, watching that speech in the football stadium with the U2-laced intro and the fireworks at the end, that something important happened tonight. Something pivotal.

It’s a bit of a travesty that we’re realistically at a point where America could become what Canada should be. We could go backward while the US goes forward. It’s disappointing that all of the sudden our country’s politics are ridiculously divisive and more regionalized. We have a Prime Minister who hates everything about Canada’s political history (And I’m not a rabid anti-Harper guy or anything. I think, considering the circumstances, he’s done a fair job [until recently with Flaherty and Clement being dicks all the time] but, seriously, he doesn’t seem to like the idea of Canada.) and an opposition that is out of money and in disarray.

There are very few lights.

But who knows where things will go. I’ve still got the cynicism and I’ve still got that impending feeling that the Republican machine can steamroll through and take this election again. But there’s a nagging hope inside of me after tonight. And that’s not bad at all.
